Gujiya Recipe: The Indian Twist to the Donut

Gajre Ka Gujiya, also known as Gujiya or Gunjiya in some parts of India, is one of the traditional Indian sweets that have a soft and gooey filling of sugar and milk solids cardamom, nuts, and dry fruits, which gives it its sweet and crunchy taste. A popular Indian sweet, Gujiya is a crunchy cookie that can make with just simple ingredients. Our recipe provides two different ways to make this tasty treat without buying any outside for it. Gujiya is a type of Indian bread that typically looks like crescent-shaped donuts. It has a sweet stuffing of sugar and milk solids, cardamom, and nuts. Gujiya also has an Indian twist due to its spices, such as cardamom, its unique flavor.

 

These gujia are essential because they make up one of the staples during Holi. Gujia is typically made by frying wheat flour, sugar, and ghee together. To make these donuts, a dough is prepared with a filling and then shaped into balls that are then deep-fried. The deep-frying process provides these gluten-free balls with their signature shape and texture. Holi is a springtime Hindu festival celebrated with the throwing of color-soaked water, powder, and food items at each other. Indian sweets are among the popular types of food during this time, such as gujiya.

 

What are gujiyas?

This recipe is a North Indian version of gujia and includes khoya, sugar, and nuts. I have an all-purpose to whole wheat flour ratio of one cup each for this recipe. In my step-by-step cooking instructions, I show you two new ways to cook shrimp, including poaching or baking them in the oven.

  • 3/4 cup flour  
  • One tablespoon sugar

  • 285 grams khoya
  • One tablespoon of green cardamom
  • Three tablespoons semolina
  • 2/3 cup and two tablespoons sugar
  • Two tablespoons of almonds

  • One-half cup of ghee
  • 1+ 1/2 tablespoon water

 

 

How to make gujiyas – Steps

You’ll need a bowl, some all-purpose flour, and some water. With the help of these step-by-step instructions, a popular Gujiya recipe can be made:

1. Mix all-purpose flour and water in a bowl to create a soft dough. To emphasize the flavor of this traditional recipe, mix in some ghee.

 

2. Knead a soft dough. To become nice and smooth, it needs to be kneaded. Once it’s just right, keep it aside for an hour. In the meantime, you could fry up some semolina and khoya on the stove. Then, please place it in a dish to cool as it turns golden.

 

3. Prepare the filling for Gujiya. First, add the sugar, cardamom, and almonds to the khoya and mix well. Then, to give this recipe a better flavor, add some roasted, unsalted, dry nuts and raisins. This will add some crunch to your Gujiya. We now move on to the next step, taking two drops of ghee or any other refined oil and spreading it evenly on our palms. 

 

4. Fill the puris with the Shape the Dough into small, round balls. Poke a hole in the center of each and then fill it with delicious stuffing. Place a round dumpling wrapper over the stuffing and seal with another dumpling wrapper. Fry these until golden. As per your desire, roll the parts from each side. bake the Gujiya and enjoy.

 

5. Place the pan over a medium flame, put in the ghee, fry the Gujiyas until they’re a deep brown all around, and serve with some iced Thandai and hot Pakoras. Add a few saffron strands and crushed pistachios. You can also serve it with some Rabri.

 

 

 

Tips

1. For making Gujiyas, the Dough plays a significant role. You must mix a stiff dough and allow it to rest for half an hour, then shape the dough and cut it into Puris for the Gujiya.

 

2. The critical part of cooking Gujiyas is frying them at the right temperature. For this reason, always fry Gujiyas on medium heat and give them some time to cook. 

 

3. Fill Gujiyas less than 3⁄4 of the way to the top, so they don’t burst while cooking. This might sound like a stretch, but you must fry Gujiyas as soon as they’re filled, as it’ll fry them more quickly and will not saturate them with as much oil or ghee. 

 

4. You can also use powdered sugar or molasses to fill these scrumptious gujiyas.

 

Health benefit

Gujia is a very healthy snack with no fat and low calories. It is considered suitable for people with diabetes as it has less than 3 grams of sugar per guide. In addition, Gujia contains phytochemicals such as resveratrol and quercetin that protect us from cancer and heart disease.
